what is an allergy test?
explanation
By means of an allergy test it is possible to determine whether you are allergic. An allergy test is performed to find out which substances you react to. An allergy test at KNO Medisch Centrum consists of a number of injections with substances that you can react to (allergens) in the skin.
Why an allergy test?
why
Your ENT doctor thinks that a possible allergy is the cause of your complaints. That is why it is important to investigate whether you are actually allergic. If the cause of your complaints is an allergy, it can often be treated well. Sometimes you have already done an allergy test in the past, but it may be wise to repeat this test to investigate whether an allergy to other substances has developed over time.
How do you prepare for an allergy test?
preparation
We do the skin test on the forearm. It is important not to use soap, body lotion or ointment on your forearm on the day of the skin test. The drops will then roll off your forearm.
stop taking anti-allergic medicines
If you are taking an anti-histamine tablet for your allergic symptoms, you may not use it 3 days before the examination. These drugs can influence the test.
A nasal spray is allowed.
If you use antidepressants and/or beta-blockers, please discuss with the outpatient clinic whether you can take them. You can continue to use all other medicines.
How does the test go?
during the treatment
For a skin test, we use liquids containing substances from the natural environment such as grass and tree pollen, house dust mites or animal dander. We apply a drop of the different liquids to your forearm. Through the drop we pierce the top layer of the skin with a small needle. You can feel this, but a pinprick is more annoying. Because the skin test is virtually painless, this test is also suitable for children. Redness and swelling may occur at the injection site. If you see a bump, you have an allergy.
The fabrics should work for about 10 minutes. The different substances can react in those 10 minutes. This reaction may include itching, redness, and a small bump. It is important not to touch or scratch the inside of the forearms. This can influence the test. After about 10 minutes, the assistant checks the skin reactions.
What happens after the test?
after the treatment
After the skin test, you can resume your daily activities.
When will you get the results?
If possible, the ENT doctor will discuss the results of the skin test with you right away. If this does not work, we will make an appointment.
What possible risks are there with an allergy test?
risks
In theory, you may have too severe an allergic reaction to one of the substances being tested. In that case, you may experience an excessive allergic reaction. The following complaints may arise:
- Excessive swelling of the skin
- Excessive redness of the skin
- A thick feeling in the throat
- Shortness of breath
The chance of these side effects is very small (less than 0.1%). However, if these side effects do occur, you will be given medication that will make the symptoms disappear.
